Nanooks Hockey Secures Game One Win at Home

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team grabbed a 3-1 win over the No. 18/18 Arizona State Sun Devils on Friday, Feb. 23.

Neither side scored in the first two periods. After 40 minutes, ASU had out shot the 'Nooks 18-16; The Nanooks were 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-3 on the power play.

Entering the third, everything shifted. 5:35 into the third, Chase Dafoe made it 1-0 Nanooks. William Lawson-Body and Kyle Gaffney made a pair of perfect passes before finding Dafoe in the slot. The sophomore forward beat Gibson Homer for the late lead. Over 10 minutes later, Arizona State tied the game at 1-1 as Brandon Tabakin found the equalizer. Less than two minutes later the Nanooks went on the power play with just under two minutes to play. After a coaches review, the two-minute cross-check penalty was upgraded to a five-minute major, hitting from behind call.

Alaska capitalized. Anton Rubtsov scored the game-winning goal only 30 seconds into the major, tipping the puck in after a Cade Neilson pass found him. Payton Matsui earned the secondary assist on the game-winner. 36 seconds later, 19:12.8 into the third, the Nanooks added their final goal of the win. Dafoe scored his second of the night and gave the Nanooks their second power-play goal of the night. Braden Birnie and T.J. Lloyd earned the assists on Dafoe's second goal of the night.

Due to a number of penalties and growing tensions between the two sides in the final 16 seconds, the officials made the decision to call the game with 11.1 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Nanooks finished the night 2-11 on the power play but held ASU's offense off the board on the man-advantage, finishing the night 4-4 on the penalty kill.

These two teams matchup one more time at 7:07 p.m. in the Carlson Center on Saturday, Feb. 24.
