Men's Hoops Welcomes Western Washington and Simon Fraser for Big GNAC Matchups

FAIRBANKS - The Vikings of Western Washington and the Red Leafs of Simon Fraser come to Fairbanks for a big week of games for the Nanooks men's basketball team.

Staff/Faculty Appreciation Night
Are you a member of the University of Alaska Fairbanks staff or faculty? If so, come out on Thursday, Feb. 15 for Staff/Faculty Appreciation Night! The Nanooks will be recognizing all staff/faculty in attendance - not only that, but if you show your active Polar Express ID, you're in FREE! 

Indigenous People's Day
The Nanooks will celebrate Indigenous People's Day on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Simon Fraser. Come out and celebrate with a 2:15 p.m. tip-off. 

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of a tough road-trip that saw them fall to Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene. CWU took the win in Ellensburg, Wash. 88-60 on Feb. 8 and NNU grabbed the win over Alaska 70-52 in Nampa on Feb. 10.

  • The Nanooks are 37th in the nation and lead the GNAC with 4.1 blocks per game. They are led by Abdullahi Mohamed with 1.06 blocks per game, good for fourth in the conference. His 19 total blocks also puts him fifth in the GNAC.
  • Alaska's 35.5 rebounds per game is good for fifth in the GNAC; they are led by Nick Hopkins with 6.3 rebounds per game. Mohamed follows with 6.1 boards per game. 
  • Mohamed and Hopkins are in the top-five for the GNAC in offensive rebounds per game. Hopkins checks in at fifth with 2.21 per game while Mohamed is second with 3.06.
  • Mohamed is also top-five in scoring in the GNAC with 15.7 points per game. 
  • Hopkins' 6.3 rebounds per game is seventh in the conference. 
  • On Feb. 10 at NNU, Mohamed recorded his fourth game of 20+ points; this ties him for ninth in the GNAC with 20+ point performances. He is also one of eight athletes in the GNAC to score 30+ points this season.
  • Jaycson Bereal, Jr., Hopkins and Mohamed have all recorded 10+ rebounds in a game this season. Bereal has recorded one while the other two have each recoreded a pair of games with 10+.

Regional/National Rankings
Saint Martin's returned to the top of the D2CSC West Region Top-10 with 58 points and four of the six first-place votes. They are one of three in the top-10 with a fifth team receiving votes. Montana State Billings checks in at No. 5 with 38 points. At No. 9 is Central Washington with nine votes and Northwest Nazarene received three votes. In the D2CSC Men's Basketball Top-25, Saint Martin's sits at No. 8, moving up a spot from T-No. 9 last week. 

In the NABC Coaches Top-25, SMU is the only GNAC team, checking in at No. 13 - the same as last week.

What's to Come
This homestand kicks off the final six games of the regular-season for the Nanooks men's team. Following this week, they are off to Western Oregon and Saint Martin's on Feb. 22 and 24 for their final road tests of the season. On Feb. 29 they come back for their final home games against MSUB on the 29th and SPU on March 2. The Feb. 29 game against MSUB is their annual Pink Game and March 2 will be Senior Day.
