SCHENECTADY, New York - The Nanooks hockey team surged back in the third period to erase a 3-0 deficit and force a tie in game one at Union. The Nanooks are now 2-5-2 on the season.
How it Happened
Union picked up three goals in the opening 40 minutes, taking a 3-0 lead into the third period. Nate Hanley opened up the scoring for the Garnet Chargers 8:41 in the first. The 1-0 Union lead carried into the second, but 13 seconds into the middle stanza, Riley Brueck found the back of the net making it 2-0 Union. 11:17 later, Union made it 3-0 on a Brandon Buhr goal.
Through the opening 40 minutes, the Nanooks were outshooting Union 14-12, but could not light the lamp.
10:19 into the third period,
Anton Rubtsov kicked off the scoring frenzy for the Nanooks. After trailing
Matt Koethe as the puck entered the zone, Rubtsov played Koethe's rebound into a shot of his own, after the initial two saves, Rubtsov buried the putback to get the 'Nooks on the board and make it 3-1. Koethe earned the primary while
Luke LaMaster tallied the secondary assist. At the 4:46 mark the Nanooks pulled
Nicholas Grabko from net and played with the extra attacker. Following a
Kyle Gaffney faceoff win, Rubtsov tallied his second goal of the night. This time attacking the net from the slot, beating netminder Kyle Chauvette to make it 3-2 Union.
With 2:01 remaining in the third, the Nanooks pulled Grabko, once again. The second time around, they managed two shots and one on net, but on the third attempt,
Matt Rickard stepped into a slap shot from the point and tied the game at 3-3 with 20 seconds remaining.
Matt Hubbarde earned the assist on the game-tying goal to send the game to overtime. In the extra period the Nanooks put five shots-on-goal but came up empty while Grabko saved both attempts from Union.
The game officially ended in a tie. Union took the shootout, making two of the three attempts while the Nanooks made one of the three.
Inside the Numbers
- Alaska managed to kill both of Union's power-play opportunities. One kill in the second period and one in the third.
- The Nanooks went 0-4 on the power play, putting four SOG while on the man-advantage.
- Coming into tonight's matchup with Union, the Nanooks had one multipoint performance. Kyle Gaffney's two-point game in game two at Clarkson. Tonight they had two two-point scorers in Rubtsov (2G) and Hubbarde (2A).
- The 'Nooks put 18 shots-on-goal in the third period alone, more than doubling their amount coming into the period. They ended the night with 34 SOG, the most in a game this season.
- Six Nanooks recorded a point in tonight's tie.
- Alaska went .500 in the faceoff circle, splitting the 62 draws with 31 wins. Kyle Gaffney led the way, going 9-8 while William Lawson-Body followed with a 7-5 night in 12 bouts.
