POTSDAM, New York - The Nanooks hockey team was victorious on Friday night in Cheel Arena as they grabbed their second-straight win, winning 3-1 over the Clarkson Golden Knights. The victory moves Alaska to 2-5-0 on the season and sets up game two tomorrow at 3 p.m. AKST.
How it Happened
Clarkson tallied the opening goal of the night 6:17 into the second period after the two sides skated to a scoreless first intermission. Jared Mangan scored Clarkson's lone goal of the night and gave them the lead for the next nine minutes. 15:54 into the period,
Chase Dafoe found the twine from just outside the crease. After winning the draw, the alternate captain scored out front off of a
Luke LaMaster shot and save by Golden Knight goalie Ethan Langenegger. The equalizer was Dafoe's second goal of the season and LaMaster's first assist and point of the 2024-25 campaign. The 1-1 score would carry into the third where the Nanooks would grab the two final tallies of the night.Â
Cade Ahrenholz picked up the game-winner for the Nanooks in the third stanza, scoring his first goal of the season unassisted. 3:44 into the period, he played the puck on a failed clearance attempt, after carrying the puck into the attacking zone, he beat the Clarkson netminder for the 2-1 lead. Alaska went on to withhold the Clarkson push and 17:48 into the third,
Kyle Gaffney capped the night off with an empty-netter for the 3-1 victory.
By the Numbers
- Nicholas Grabko picked up his second-straight victory in net for the Nanooks. The graduate goalie made 23 saves including eight in the first, nine in the second and six in the third.
- He played all 60 minutes in net.Â
- Six different Nanooks scored a point in the victory. Alongside the three goals and LaMaster's assist, William Lawson-Body picked up an assist as did Broten Sabo.
- This victory for the Nanooks was their first at Cheel Arena.Â
- Chase Dafoe won nine faceoff attempts in tonight's victory, the most by a Nanook. Kyle Gaffney won seven of 15 attempts, leading the 'Nooks in the faceoff win percentage.Â
- Alaska finished the night 5-6 on the penalty kill, including killing a 5-on-3 situation late in the third period.Â
