Nanooks Pull Off Upset on the Road

Alaska uses a 37-save shutout from Nicholas Grabko to grab their first win over No. 18/18 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Indiana - The Nanooks hockey team got into the win column in big fashion on Saturday, Oct. 19. Behind Nicholas Grabko's 37-save performance, Alaska grabbed a 1-0 win over No. 18/18 Notre Dame in the Compton Family Ice Arena.

How it Happened
After the opening 20 minutes the score was 0-0. The Nanooks outshot the Fighting Irish 11-7 in the first but went 0-2 on the power play, including a five-minute power play after a Ryan Helliwell game misconduct. In the second, Broten Sabo tallied the lone goal, picking up his first-career game-winner. 11:50 into the second, Noah Barlage found Sabo in the left faceoff circle; off of the one-timer, Sabo beat UND netminder Nicholas Kempf for the 1-0 lead. This was Sabo's second goal of the weekend and season.

Alongside scoring the lone goal in the second, the Nanooks managed to kill three Notre Dame power-play opportunities. With 5:55 remaining in the second, Nicholas Grabko made the save of the game, diving across the crease to make a second save after an initial save moments before. The diving stop kept Notre Dame off the board and helped secure the victory.

In the third, the Nanooks put three shots-on-goal and withstood 10 from the Fighting Irish. Grabko shut the door for his first shutout of the season and first victory with the Nanooks.

Inside the Numbers

  • Grabko made 20 of his 37 saves in the second period. Alaska was outshot in the second 20-9 but managed the game-winning goal.
  • Broten Sabo scored his second goal of the season, a night after scoring his first goal.
  • Grabko's 37 saves are the most in a shutout win by a Nanooks goalie since March 4, 2006 when the Nanooks shutout Notre Dame on the road with 39 saves by Wylie Rogers.
  • Noah Barlage tallied his first-career point with his assist on the winning goal.
  • William Lawson-Body won seven of his 15 bouts in the faceoff circle to lead the Nanooks. He also led the team tonight with three blocked shots. The team posted 11 blocks on the night.
