GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Nanooks hockey team fell to the #4-ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Friday, Jan. 5 at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The loss drops the Nanooks to 10-8-1.
The Nanooks struck first on Friday night as
Caleb MacDonald took a pass from
Chase Dubois in the attacking zone and fired a shot past UND netminder, Hobie Hedquist. The MacDonald goal came 15:58 into the first and gave Alaska the one-goal advantage in the first intermission.
T.J. Lloyd was awarded the secondary assist. Only 2:50 into the second period, NoDak tied the game at 1-1 while on the power play. Owen McLaughlin scored his first of two on the night. This started a string of five unanswered goals for the Hawks. Riese Gaber scored nearly four minutes later for a 2-1 lead. Louis Jamernik V and Cameron Berg scored within a minute of each other to make it 4-1 before McLaughlin tallied his second to make it 5-1 Hawks.
1:29 later,
Payton Matsui scored the second Alaska goal of the night. He redirected a
T.J. Lloyd shot and found the back of the net to make cut the deficit to 5-2.
Just over seven minutes into the third, the deficit grew as Gaber scored his second of the night, extending the lead to 6-2. Alaska did not go away;
Chase Dafoe cut the deficit in half 11:00 into the third and then MacDonald scored his second goal of the night and third point of the night, making it a 6-4 North Dakota lead. Unfortunately it was too late and the Hawks took the victory on night one. Alongside MacDonalds three-point night, Lloyd had a pair of assists.
