Women's Hoops Hits the Road for Trip to Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's basketball team continues their GNAC schedule with games at Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington this week.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are fresh off of their in-state rivalry game with Alaska Anchorage. They fell to the Seawolves on the road in Anchorage, 84-55 on Saturday, Jan. 13. The Nanooks were led by Emma Wass and Ellen Silva as Wass posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double and Silva followed with a near double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds.

  • Alaska kicks off their road-trip with Northwest Nazarene. They are 0-10 against NNU over the last 10 matchups and are looking for their first win against the Nighthawks since Jan. 3, 2015. 
  • The Nanooks were in two battles with NNU a year ago as they fell in overtime at home on Jan. 12, 2023, 90-88 and fell 79-72 on the road in Nampa, Idaho on Feb. 11, 2023. 
  • The last win in Nampa for the Nanooks came on Jan. 24, 2007, a 65-64 win.
  • The 'Nooks are looking to grab a win over Central for the first time since 2017. They won back-to-back matchups on Feb. 11, 2016 (70-61) and Jan. 14, 2017 (69-56).

Big on the Boards
The Nanooks have a pair of strong rebounders down low in Silva and Wass. They are both top-10 in the GNAC as Wass is third with 146 total rebounds and Silva is ninth with 111. Wass' 8.1 defensive rebounds a game leads the conference and sixth in the NCAA Division II. Silva is grabbing 5.1 defensive boards per game, good for eighth in the GNAC. Wass is grabbing 9.7 rebounds per game, second in the GNAC and 26th in the nation. Silva is ninth and 145th with 7.4 rebounds per game. 

As a team, the Nanooks are 38th in the nation and second in the GNAC with 28.5 team defensive rebounds per game. Their 38.8 total rebounds per game puts them fifth in the GNAC.
