'Nooks Hit Road for Conference Games at Simon Fraser and Western Washington

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks men's basketball team hits the road and continues GNAC play at Simon Fraser and Western Washington this upcoming week.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are off of back-to-back home losses to Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington on Jan. 11 and Jan. 13. The Nanooks fell in double-overtime on Jan. 11 to NNU, 96-93. Abdullahi Mohamed posted a strong night with 30 points and four rebounds. He went 9-17 from the floor and 12-12 from the free-throw line. His strong performances did not stop there as he posted a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double against the Wildcats on Jan. 13. The Nanooks unfortunately fell to CWU 69-65, dropping their losing streak to four.

  • The Nanooks have been close in their last four games. Despite losing all four, they've lost by an average of only 4.25.
  • On the road, Alaska is 2-5. Their two wins came at Hawaii Hilo and Seattle Pacific. Their win at SPU is their lone GNAC victory on the season. 
  • Alaska is 3-1 in their last four matchups with Simon Fraser. The Nanooks grabbed a win at SFU last season on Feb. 11, 2023, winning over the Red Leafs 75-58. They dropped the home game last season 78-69. 
  • One of the three wins over SFU in the last four matchups came on March 2, 2022 in the Nanooks' GNAC championship run. They beat SFU 91-83 in OT to advance to the GNAC Quarterfinals. 
  • The Nanooks have grabbed two of the last three matchups with the Western Washington Vikings. Their last matchup came on Feb. 9, 2023 in Bellingham, Wash. and resulted in a Vikings' victory. The Nanooks won at home on Jan. 14, 2023, 75-73, and won during the 2021-22 season in Fairbanks, 81-75, on Feb. 3, 2022.

Mohamed is up to 14.6 points per game to lead the Nanooks this season. His team-high scoring avaerage and 175 points is good for sixth in the conference. He is also a top-10 rebounder in the GNAC, coming in at seventh this week with 6.5 boards per game. 

Off the Glass
The Nanooks have proven themselves on the rebounding front this season. They have played the least amount of games in the conference with 13 (tied with Western Oregon) and are averaging the fifth-most rebounds per game at 36.9. They have 156 offensive rebounds and 323 defensive rebounds for 479 total. They are holding their opponents to 32.4 rebounds per game (421 total), good for the third-lowest total in the GNAC. Their +4.5 rebounding margin is also third in the GNAC and 55th in the nation.

The Nanooks are third in the GNAC for blocked shots per game with 3.8 and 50 total and they are 61st in the nation in the category. 29 of their 50 blocks come from three players as Mohamed leads with 12, Jaycson Bereal, Jr. follows with nine and TJ Doman follows with eight. The Nanooks have shot blockers all around the court as six players check-in with five-plus blocks on the season.
