Hockey Posts 8-1 Victory in Exhibition Win over VIU

FAIRBANKS - Alaska walked away with an 8-1 win on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Carlson Center, knocking-off their exhibition foe, Vancouver Island. The 'Nooks posted four first-period goals to put this one to rest early. It took only 49 seconds for the Nanooks to claim a 1-0 lead as Brady Risk scored on an even strength goal, taking the puck from Arvils Bergmanis and Payton Matsui. Just over two minutes later, the Nanooks had themselves a 2-0 lead as T.J. Lloyd sliced his way to the front of the net before making it 2-0. Harrison Israels and Jonny Sorenson tallied the apples on the second goal.

They'd go 10 minutes without another until Sorenson got himself in the scoring category. Risk eventually added another only 35 seconds later to close out the scoring for the Nanooks in the first and make it 4-0 heading into the first intermission. Arvils Bergmanis capitalized on the power-play in the second period, scoring the fifth Nanooks' goal of the night 4:24 into the second. Cade Neilson added another less than a minute later, snapping one off from the slot, beating the VIU netminder to make it 6-0.

A brief break was needed as fire alarms rang through the Carlson Center, causing a longer second intermission and evacuation. After firefighters cleared the venue for teams and fans to return, the third period began. 6:40 into the third, Edvards Bergmanis joined his brother in the scoring category with a goal right outside of the crease. Broten Sabo ended the 'Nooks scoring only five seconds after the puck dropped following E. Bergmanis' goal, making it 8-0. VIU would get on the board 21 seconds later to make it 8-1 Nanooks, but that was all the Mariners got on the board.

All three Nanook goalies played tonight. Pierce Charleson saw the first period and made four saves on all four shots he saw. Lassi Lehti got the second period and stopped all two shots and William Hambley saw the third and stopped one shot on two attempts. In total, the Nanooks faced eight shots while putting a whopping 50 on net, scoring on eight of them.

Alaska opens up their regular-season next weekend when they welcome the #4-ranked Denver Pioneers to town. Both Saturday and Sunday's games are slated to begin at 5:07 p.m.
