ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Nanooks cross country teams opened their 2023 season in Anchorage, visiting the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves for the Seawolf Throwdown. The women's team won the dual-meet 18-39, while the men's team fell to UAA 38-17.
A windy and rainy day in Anchorage could not stop the Nanooks women. The trio of Rosie Fordham, Kendall Kramer and Naomi Bailey swept the top three finishes at the Seawolf Throwdown. Fordham finished the women's 5k in 18:10, Kramer came in just behind Fordham at 18:14 and Bailey wrapped up the top three with a time of 18:17. Nell Baker of UAA was the top finisher for the Seawolves, finishing in fourth overall taking a time of 18:39. Nanook Delainey Zock wrapped up the top five finishers with a time of 19:33.Â
Jordan Strausbaugh of UAA took sixth, finishing 10 seconds behind Zock with a 19:43 finishing time. Nanook freshman Tabitha Williams took seventh in her first collegiate race with a time of 19:46, Seawolf freshman Avery Williamson finished 38 seconds behind Williams for eighth place with a time of 20:24. Teegan Silva took ninth with a time of 20:29. UAA took 10th and 11th place, respectively, as Sofija Spaic and Aunika Miller finished in 20:40 and 21:09, individually. The Nanooks wrapped up the women's side with 12th and 13th. Sarah Baum took 12th, and Isabel Baesman took 13th in her first collegiate race. Baum and Baesman took times of 21:09 and 23:44, respectively.
The men's race was an 5k and was won by UAA's Cole Nash. He led the pack, winning with a time of 15:06, 19 seconds faster than his teammate, John Peckham, who placed second. Zachary Kohler ran a 15:45 for the Seawolves, claiming third place. Ben Dohlby of the Nanooks took fourth with a time of 15:56 in his collegiate debut. George Payne and Michael Zapherson of the Seawolves took fifth and sixth place. Phillip Moosmayer, Jace Peters, Finn Morley, Ryan Owens, Kona Atkins and Josh Baurick rounded out the Nanooks' scoring, taking seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th with times of 16:54, 16:55, 17:17, 17:52, 17:57 and 18:54.Â
The Nanooks and Seawolves will meet again on Sept. 9 at the UAF Running Trails for the Blue and Gold Meet.Â
