PORTLAND, Ore. - The Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced their 2022-23 Men's Basketball All-Conference teams and special awards. Abdullahi Mohamed was named a Second Team All-Conference selection.
"It is a great honor for Abdul being selected on the GNAC Second Team All-Conference." Said head coach Greg Sparling, "He has improved his game in so many different ways this season. He saw a lot of double and triple teams this year which made him a better player. We are looking forward to a big senior season from Abdul." Mohamed, a junior from Seattle, Wash. led the Nanooks in scoring this season. He posted 302 total points, averaging 13.1 points per game over the span of 23 games played and 22 starts. He had the second-best FG%, shooting 49.5% (99-200). He knocked down 7-12 from three, shooting 41.2% from range and made 97 free throws, the most on the team.
He finished the season third in the rebounding category for Alaska, grabbing 116 total rebounds on 69 defensive rebounds and 47 offensive boards. He averaged 5.0 rebounds per game. Mohamed dished 39 assists, blocked 18 shots and picked up 14 steals. This season, Mohamed posted four 20+ point games and scored in double-digits in 18 of the 23 games this season, including the final 12 games of the regular-season. Over the span of the final dozen games, he averaged 14.75 points per game. Mohamed was grateful for the honor and the chance the 'Nooks took on him, "I am grateful for Alaska taking a chance on me after I almost hung up my jersey coming out of Eastern Washington after 2019-20."
Alaska wrapped-up the 2022-23 season on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Seattle Pacific, finishing the season 11-15, 6-12 GNAC and finishing in eighth-place in the GNAC Men's Basketball standings.
Montana State Billings took home three of the five individual awards as Carrington Wiggins was named the 2022-23 GNAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year, Mick Durham was named the Coach of the Year and Bilal Shabazz was named the Defensive Player of the Year. BJ Kelly of Western Washington was named the Freshman of the Year and Branden Bunn of Saint Martin's was named the Newcomer of the Year.
