HILO, Hi. - San Francisco State knocked off the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team on Monday, Dec. 18, 62-58, dropping Alaska to 3-7, 1-1 GNAC on the season.
The 'Nooks held on to a one-point lead after the first half of play, but SFS outscored the Nanooks 33-28 in the second to grab the four-point victory.
Demarcus Hall-Scriven and
Paul Johnson got the scoring started with a Hall-Scriven three and Johnson jumper. After jumping out to a 5-0 lead, San Francisco State came back to tie the game. Alaska went on a 6-0 run on a pair of
Abdullahi Mohamed buckets and another Johnson basket. Their lead stuck until the 5:23 mark when SFS took a 22-21 lead. Their lead would grow to four before the Nanooks stormed back to take the halftime lead. A pair of
Tyriq Luke free throws pulled Alaska to within two and with two seconds left,
Paul Johnson intercepted a pass and walked into a three at the buzzer, making it 30-29 Nanooks.
Alaska shot 37.04% from the floor and 40% from three.
Out of the break, San Francisco State grabbed the momentum. Within four minutes, the Gators had a nine-point lead. Alaska answered well, coming back to tie the game at 42-42 on nine-straight points. After falling behind by seven, the Nanooks worked back to tie the game again at 55-55 with 2:40 remaining. SFS jumped back ahead by six with 45 seconds left. Hall-Scriven connected on a three with nine seconds left but Alaska fell 62-58.
Abdullahi Mohamed led the way with 15 points on 7-15 shooting while adding five rebounds.
Demarcus Hall-Scriven added 14 points on 3-4 shooting from deep while grabbing seven rebounds.
Jaycson Bereal, Jr.,
TJ Doman and
Paul Johnson all had nine points. Doman added a team-high nine rebounds.
