Men's Hoops Goes 45 Minutes with UAA but Falls in OT

FAIRBANKS - Alaska Anchorage spoiled a packed Patty Center's night on Saturday, Jan. 6; they left with a 64-58 OT win over the Nanooks, dropping Alaska to 3-8, 1-2 GNAC.

The first half was anything but offensive as both sides struggled offensively. UAA posted a 19.35% shooting clip, going 6-31 from the floor, 2-15 from three and 2-7 from the free-throw line. Alaska outshot them 7-24 (29.17%) from the floor, 2-9 from three and 7-9 from the free-throw line. They took a 23-16 lead into the halftime locker room. The second half saw both sides improve offensively. Despite outscoring UAA by nine at the free-throw line, Alaska struggled from deep, ending the night 3-18 from three while Alaska Anchorage hit 10 threes.

In the second, Alaska's Nick Hopkins made it a six-point lead on an offensive rebound and put-back. Their lead would stay until the 17:32 mark when Tyson Gilbert connected on a transition three, making it 31-29 UAA. The two sides traded runs and leads before Alaska got their lead up to four with 9:06 left in the second. Bryan Nguyen connected on the trey to make it 44-40 Nanooks. The trading of runs began again and down the stretch, Alaska used a layup from Trey Anderson to tie it up at 52-52, forcing the overtime period. In the overtime period, UAA struck first, hitting a three to take a 55-52 lead. Abdullahi Mohamed got a bucket back, bringing it to a one-point game, but UAA had an answer to each of Alaska's buckets in the OT period. After making it a three-point game, Demarcus Hall-Scriven had a look in the corner but missed. Anchorage went down the court and extended their lead to six with less than a minute left - they went on to win 64-58.

Jaycson Bereal, Jr. and Trey Anderson led the way offensively for Alaska. Bereal had 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. He added two blocks and a steal while going 2-4 from the floor, 2-3 from three and 8-11 from the free-throw line. Anderson was 4-7 from the floor and had 10 points, three rebounds, one block and steal.

Alaska returns home next week as it welcomes Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington on Jan. 11-13.
