Strong Shooting Down the Stretch Secures First Win of the Season for Nanooks

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's team collected win number one on the season after knocking-off Cal State San Bernardino.

CSUSB held on to a one-point lead after the first quarter, holding the 13-12 advantage after 10 minutes of play. Alaska posted a strong end to the second quarter to tie the game at 25-25 after the first half. The Nanooks took a three-point lead into the fourth after outscoring CSUSB 16-13 in the third and then grabbed the win with a huge fourth quarter; they outscored the Coyotes 29-24 to secure the eight-point victory.

The first was closely contested. Alaska jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Coyotes came back to take a 6-4 lead. An Emma McKenney three-pointer stopped the run and made it 7-6 'Nooks. They'd grab another lead at 12-10 on an Emma Wass layup and-one but CSUSB grabbed a one-point lead heading into the second. In the second, the 'Nooks played from behind and rallied late to force the tie at the break. After trailing 23-18, the Nanooks got a bucket from Kayla Johnson on an inbounds pass from Anna Nevison, a fastbreak bucket from Ekko Hopkins and another McKenney three to make it 25-23 Alaska. The Coyotes tied it up at 25-25 with a layup with 1:43 remaining and the score stood into the locker room.

Out of the break, the Nanooks ran out to a four-point lead. San Bernardino eventually tied the game at 31-31 but the Nanooks were finding answers to everything; this time it was McKenney again, hitting a three to give the 'Nooks a five-point lead after a pair of Ellen Silva free throws. The next time down the court, Emma Wass connected from deep, giving the Nanoosk their biggest lead of eight. CSUSB would shrink that lead to three as the two went into the fourth. The fourth was an offensive outburst as both sides posted 20+ points in the quarter. The Coyotes tied the game up at 45-45 just over three minutes into the fourth quarter. Alaska, once again, found the answers, regaining the lead and running their lead out to nine on a Taryn Lindsey jumper, McKenney three and back-to-back Ellen Silva layups. Later in the quarter, the 'Nooks would found themselves up by a dozen with 1:21 remaining in the fourth. CSUSB would get to within eight but that was as close as they'd come as the 'Nooks found the win column for the first time this season.

Emma McKenney led the 'Nooks offensively with 17 points on 4-10 shooting from deep. She added six assists and three rebounds. Both Ellen Silva and Emma Wass had a double-double. Wass posted 14 points and 15 boards while Silva had a dozen points and 16 rebounds. Kayla Johnson joined with 12 points and Taryn Lindsey dished four assists while scoring nine in the victory.

The 'Nooks are back in action tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. against Covenant College.
