MONTEREY, Calif. - The Nanooks men's basketball team fell to Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Nov. 24 83-64. With the loss, the 'Nooks fall to 1-4, 0-0 GNAC on the season.
The Otters of CSUMB posted a strong shooting night, running up a 62.9% clip from the field in the first half. They shot 17-27 from the floor and 5-11 to outscore the Nanooks 44-22 in the first. Alaska shot 9-27 (33.3%) in the first. The Otters ran out to an early 12-3 lead in the opening 3:30 of play. After making it a double-digit deficit for Alaska, the Nanooks managed to pull it back to single-digits on a
Tyriq Luke jumper with 10:27 to play. Unfortunately in the next seven minutes, CSUMB grew their lead to 20.
Their halftime lead would be 22 after hitting a three-pointer with five seconds remaining.
Out of the break, the 'Nooks pulled within 17 on back-to-back free throws from
Nick Hopkins.
Abdullahi Mohamed followed up with a three to bring it back to 17 after an Otter three-pointer. CSUMB's lead grew back to as many as 22 until Alaska made it a 15-point game with 9:46 remaining in the second on a Luke jumper. The Nanooks would not get any closer than 15, eventually falling 83-64. Mohamed led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds. He shot 6-16 from the floor, 2-4 from deep and 5-6 from the free-throw line.
Nick Hopkins added 13 and
Tyriq Luke ended with a dozen and six rebounds.
The 'Nooks play Cal State East Bay tomorrow.
