SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Nanooks women's basketball team fell in their matchup against the Westminster Griffins after strong team effort on all fronts, finalizing the score of 57-64.
The Nanooks led from the start with McKenney posting the first point of the night after a Westminster technical foul. It looked to be a toe-to-toe matchup in the first, with the Nanooks outshooting the Griffins 38.5% from the floor and 33.3% from the arc. From there, intensity only grew after Taylor Tiulana drained a three to keep the Griffins' lead to only one.
The second period is where the Nanooks fired on all cylinders, and specifically where sophomore Kayla Johnson pulled out all the stops. The 'Nooks ran away with an unanswered 10-point run after Johnson dominated the paint, posting six points and a rebound in less than three minutes. It was in the third quarter where the Griffins pushed back against the Nanooks lead.
After a strong offensive start for Westminster in the third, freshman Anna Nevison responded with a gym-silencing three, and held the 'Nooks lead at 38-32. Westminster fought against the silence inducer with a 12-point run, which McKenney put a stop to in the final seconds of the quarter after fighting her way through the Griffins' defense to increase her individual points to seven. In the fourth, Westminster outscored Alaska 20-17 with the help of 8-11 shooting from the free-throw line. The Nanooks posted a strong fourth, shooting 53.85% from the floor, but fell in the end. Silva finalized her stats for the night, posting a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double, and McKenney ended the night as lead point scorer with 13 of her own. The Nanooks look to rebound from the night as they face the Westminster Griffins for a second time tomorrow, November 18 at 1:00 p.m.
