MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Nanooks hockey team fell to 6-4-1 on the season with a 3-1 loss to the Northern Michigan Wildcats on Friday, Nov. 17. The loss snaps the 'Nooks five-game winning streak.
NMU held a 1-0 lead after the first period despite the Nanooks outshooting them 12-8. 19:06.9 into the first, Matvei Kabanov got the scoring started for the Wildcats. The late tally gave NMU a 1-0 lead in the first intermission. They began the second period just how they ended the first. It took only 1:46 off the clock for it to become 2-0 Wildcats, this time Andre Ghantous tallied the goal.
Alaska pulled within one nearly six minutes later, making it 2-1 on a
Harrison Israels goal.
A.J. Macaulay played the puck in the opposite corner before Israels took the puck around the goal and found
Brady Risk. Risk's shot attempt trickled back to Israels near the faceoff circle and the captain fired a quick shot into the back of the net off the loose puck. This was Israels' team-leading ninth goal of the season. The assist for Risk gives him 10 on the season and improves his team-leading points total to 15. Macaulay now has four points and three assists on the season. Unfortunately for Alaska this was the lone-goal of the night. The 2-1 deficit would stand for nearly the rest of the game. 19:54.7 into the third, NMU posted their third goal of the night on an Aiden Gallacher empty-netter to make it a 3-1 final.
The Nanooks finished the night 0-4 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.
Pierce Charleson made 23 saves while the Nanooks outshot the Wildcats 29-26.
These two teams play at 2:07 p.m. AKST tomorrow in Marquette.
