Men's Hoops Falls on Day One at CSU-Pueblo

PUEBLO, Colo. - The Nanooks men's basketball team battled the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves on Friday, Nov. 17.

It was all CSU-Pueblo at halftime as the Thunderwolves ran out to a 35-24 lead after 20 minutes. Pueblo outshot the Nanooks 41% to 22% and made six more three-pointers, but 15 made free throws for the Nanooks kept them within range to close the first half. Paul Johnson gave Alaska a 3-2 lead early in the first half, the only Alaska lead of the night. Pueblo opened the half with a six-point lead. That lead fluctuated throughout the first, reaching as much as 15, and eventually became an 11-point lead after a Trey Anderson layup to end the first half.

In the second, the three-pointer remained the difference maker for Pueblo as they went 7-15 from three while Alaska went 1-5. Alaska posted a nearly 52% shooting half, and the Thunderwolves shot 41% with three fewer made field goals. The Nanooks went on a run out of the break, cutting the Pueblo lead to as few as six mid-way through the second half. After Anderson cut the Pueblo lead to seven with 6:02 remaining, Chaminade grew their lead to as much as 17 before winning the game 73-58.

Paul Johnson led the way for the Nanooks with 16 points, one rebound and one assist. Abdullahi Mohamed followed with 14 on 8-9 shooting from the free-throw line while grabbing seven boards, including three offensive rebounds.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 18, with a 2:00 p.m. start at Massari Arean.
