FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to the LIU Sharks on March 4. An early lead was not enough as LIU used a third-period comeback to take game one of the two-game series.
Eriks Zohovs started the scoring only 4:03 into the first period.
Anton Rubtsov played the puck from the walls to
Simon Falk behind the net. After settling the puck, Falk found
Eriks Zohovs in the slot and the sophomore forward beat LIU netminder, Vinnie Purpura to make it 1-0 Nanooks. 5:24 later, the Sharks evened the score. Isaiah Fox found Nolan Welsh in the neutral zone and after entering the attacking zone, Welsh found PJ Marrocco to tie it up.
After just under eight minutes,
Filip Fornaa Svensson found his ninth goal of the season and gave the Nanooks a 2-1 lead to end the first.
Garrett Pyke fired a shot from the point; following a save from Purpura,
Chase Dubois put a rebound shot through the crease and Fornaa Svensson put it home for the lead. The two sides went scoreless in the second before Billy Jerry tied it up after LIU intercepted the puck behind the Alaska net. Unfortunately LIU stole the win, scoring with 1:22 remaining. Max Balinson scored the game-winner off of a Jerry pass from behind the net.
Alaska scored the lone power-play goal of the night on Fornaa Svensson's goal. They went 4-4 on the penalty kill, and Grigals made 28 saves in the loss.
The Nanooks and Sharks return to action tomorrow night for Senior Night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m., come out early for pregame senior festivities.
