TEMPE, Ariz. - The Alaska Nanooks completed their first-ever sweep of the Arizona State Sun Devils with a 4-3 win at Oceanside Ice Arena on the campus of Arizona State University. With the win, the Nanooks moved to 9-16-1 on the season.
Didrik Henbrant got the Nanooks on the board quickly. It took only 50 seconds for the sophomore to net his seventh goal of the season, making it 1-0 off of passes from
Filip Fornaa Svensson and
Garrett Pyke. That 1-0 lead lasted 9:06 until Matthew Kopperud found the back of the net on an unassisted goal. Shortly after, the Nanooks quickly responded as
Markuss Komuls retook the lead less than three minutes later. A 2-1 lead is what the 'Nooks took into the first intermission. 7:50 into the second, while on the power play, Arizona State struck back as Colin Theisen got on the board, making it 2-2.
A night after scoring his first-career goal,
Harrison Israels struck again, this time 1:11 after Theisen for the Nanooks, giving Alaska a 3-2 lead. The Nanooks took the 3-2 lead into the third-period.
Gustavs Davis Grigals had himself another solid night, stopping 11 saves in the second and 10 in the first for 21 entering the third. He went on to face 18 shots in the third period. After a chippy back-and-forth start to the third, the Nanooks struck as
Anton Rubtsov scored for the second-straight night, picking up tonight's game-winner. His goal made it 4-2 before ASU netted one final goal with 3:03 pulling it to 4-3 but the 'Nooks escaped with the win.
Head coach
Erik Largen was proud of his teams performance and is excited to get home, "The team played really well this weekend. It was a great team effort from start to finish. We are excited now to play six of our last eight games in front of our great fans in Fairbanks."
The Nanooks return home this upcoming weekend for a matchup with the St. Thomas Tommies on Feb. 11-12 at the Carlson Center.
