Hockey Explodes for 6-1 Win over Tommies of St. Thomas

Anton Rubtsov tallies hat trick and Nanooks score six in first two periods to rout the visiting Tommies.

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team won their 10th game of the season on Friday, Feb. 11 with a dominant 6-1 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. Alaska moves to 10-16-1, cracking 10 wins for the ninth-straight season.

It was all blue and gold tonight as the 'Nooks struck only moments into the game. 4:01 into the first, Anton Rubtsov connected on his first of the night. Antti Virtanen played the puck to Eriks Zohovs, who then put the puck in front of the net. Tommies' netminder Peter Thome was caught out of position and Rubtsov found the loose puck in the crease, slotting it home for a 1-0 Alaska lead. This goal from Rubtsov extended his goal-scoring streak to four-consecutive games. 2:48 later, the Nanooks struck again, this time from Chase Dubois. While on the power play, Filip Fornaa Svensson and Garrett Pyke played the puck across the slot to the forward who connected on the one-timer, making it 2-0 'Nooks.

It did not take long for Rubtsov to strike again. Only 3:40 apart, the freshman forward made it 3-0, scoring his second of the night. Garrett Pyke was awarded his second assist of the night while Koethe added his lone-point of the night.

Alaska took a 3-0 lead into the first intermission, but their offensive run did not stop there.

Only 34 seconds into the second period, Harrison Israels continued his scoring-streak, making it three-straight games with a goal, connecting on a puck out front from Filip Fornaa Svensson. Pyke added his second assist of the night as the 'Nooks lead grew to four. 4:23 later, Rubtsov made it a hat-trick, finding a  redirection out front off of an Antti Virtanen shot. This pushed it to 5-0 Nanooks. St. Thomas changed goalies following the fifth goalie, putting in Jacob Berger.

Arvils Bergmanis capped off the scoring night for Alaska 13:50 into the second. Fresh out of the box following an indirect contact to the head penalty, Bergmanis was out front of Didrik Henbrant following an interception near the blue-line that took them into the neutral zone.

Henbrant flipped the puck forward and Bergmanis and he beat the new Tommies netminder on his blocker side to make it 6-0. After taking the 6-0 lead into the third, St. Thomas broke up the shutout opportunity 6:52 into the final period while on the power play. Ethan Gauer took a Cameron Recchi pass from behind the net and hit the one-timer from the slot for the Tommies' lone goal of the night.

Gustavs Davis Grigals posted another gem between the pipes for Alaska, as the junior stopped 28 of 29 shots for a save percentage of .965. Alongside Rubtsov's three-goal night, Garrett Pyke posted three points, all on assists. Filip Fornaa Svensson, Harrison Israels and Antti Virtanen all posted two points on the night while a total of 10 'Nooks tallied a point.

The same two teams are back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7:07 p.m. at the Carlson Center. The Nanooks will be hosting a Military Appreciation Night.
