Nanooks Hockey Snags Overtime Win over Arizona State; Looking for Another Sweep on Saturday

A pair of Filip Fornaa Svensson goals made the difference for the 'Nooks on Friday night. The sophomore forward scored the game-tying goal in the third before winning it in 3v3 OT.

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team continued their strong performances against the Arizona State Sun Devils this season with a 3-2 OT win in the Carlson. With the win, the Nanooks move to 13-17-1 with three games remaining this season.

Arizona State struck first, needing only six seconds on the power play. Off of the draw in the Alaska zone, Matt Koethe attempted to clear the puck; Matthew Kopperud of ASU intercepted the clearance attempt and beat Gustavs Davis Grigals on his pad side, making it 0-1 Sun Devils only 7:06 into the game. The Nanooks quickly answered with a power-play goal of their own as Harrison Israels found himself just outside the crease 1:48 after ASU's goal. The rookie forward redirected an Antti Virtanen shot and beat Sun Devil netminder Ben Kraws.

The game remained tied at 1-1 for the next 9:40, until Kopperud struck again for the Sun Devils, this time even-strength. Off of a give-and-go setup from Josh Doan and Colin Theisen, ASU found Kopperud streaking to the net and he beat Grigals on the one-timer in the slot.

This made it 1-2 Devils, but that was the final goal they'd find.

Neither side would capitalize in the second period, going a combined 0-2 on the power play. Midway through the third, Filip Fornaa Svensson found the back of the net off of an ASU skate. Chase Dubois slid the puck across the slot and from the faceoff circle, Fornaa Svennson made it a 2-2 tie on the wrist shot.

"This felt amazing, the boys really grinded all night…we had good juice on the bench all game." Said Fornaa Svensson during his postgame interview. His night was not over with just one. After forcing the tie, the Nanooks took ASU to 3v3 overtime. Arvils Bergmanis, Anton Rubtsov and Fornaa Svensson were what the 'Nooks needed in the extra period. Just over a minute in, Bergmanis dropped the puck to Rubtsov on the blue line; he followed with a quick burst, getting to the net before dropping the puck off to Fornaa Svennson in the slot and he buried it top-shelf for the winner.

This not only secured the comeback win, but also gave Alaska their first overtime win of the season. Fornaa Svensson gave praise to Rubtsov on the game-winner, "It was a great team effort coming back in the third period and great play by Ruby on the OT winner too, yea, it felt amazing."

Head coach Erik Largen echoed the praise of the third period, "It was great, it was a great effort in the third period by the guys, I thought that was our best period by far…overall that last 20 minutes and then in the 3v3 I thought we played our best hockey and found a way to win."

Alongside Fornaa Svensson's two goals, Chase Dubois ended the night with two assists. Grigals ended the night with 28 saves, including 11 in the scoreless second period.

These two teams are back in action tomorrow at the Carlson Center at 7:07 p.m.
