Nanooks Downed by Sharks on Long Island

EAST MEADOW, New York - The Nanooks hockey team had their five-game win streak snapped by the LIU Sharks on Friday afternoon. Alaska managed only one goal, despite 31 shots-on-goal. The Sharks took game one of the series 4-1, dropping the 'Nooks to 11-17-1 on the season.

LIU got on the board first in the first period as Tyler Welsh put home the game's first score. This goal came 16:45 into the first and the one-goal deficit for Alaska remained until 5:11 into the middle stanza. The Nanooks deficit became two as Isaiah Fox capitalized on a power-play opportunity, redirecting a puck in front of the net and in, making it 2-0 Sharks. Jerry Billy, the Sharks leading-scorer made it 3-0 just over three minutes later.

With 2:30 remaining in the second, the Nanooks got themselves on the board. Antti Virtanen took a pass from Payton Matsui and from the point, found enough daylight to beat Kris Carlson, the LIU netminder. Unfortunately, this was all the Nanooks found on day one of the two-game series. After 15 minutes in the third, the Nanooks emptied their net with just over four minutes left. LIU added one more 17:41 into the third on the empty-net as Spencer Cox scored from the Nanooks attacking-zone.

This sealed the win for LIU.

Gustavs Davis Grigals totaled 14 saves on the day. Alaska outshot the Sharks 31-18, but LIU capitalized on their last two power-play opportunities, going 2-4. The Nanooks went 1-5 on their opportunities. Roberts Kalkis picked up the only other point for the Nanooks, grabbing the secondary assist on Virtanen's goal.

The two teams meet one more time on Long Island, tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. AKT at the Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
