Women's Hoops Welcomes Central Washington for Two Before NNU on Saturday

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team is set to take on Central Washington twice and Northwest Nazarene this weekend.

Last Time Out
The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to Montana State Billings on Sunday, Jan. 30. MSUB got their revenge on the Nanooks a day after Alaska defeated the Yellow Jackets for their first GNAC win. With the loss, Alaska drops to 2-12, 1-6 GNAC.

In the first, the Nanooks outshot MSUB 43.8% to 31.3% but the Jackets held a one-point lead after the first. Ellen Silva started the scoring, scoring on a layup nearly two minutes into the game. They went on to start the game on an 11-8 run, leading by three with 4:50 remaining in the quarter as Pearle Green hit her second bucket of the quarter. The Jackets responded with their own 6-2 run, taking a 14-11 lead entering the final two minutes of the opening-quarter. To end the quarter, the Nanooks ended on a 7-5 run, pulling within one on Silva's second make of the quarter. Entering the second, the Nanooks deficit grew to 10 heading into halftime.

MSUB went on an 18-6 run, sparking a lead of 37-24 before Green connected on another three-pointer for her 10th point of the night. Alaska pulled within 10 and entered the locker room down 41-31. The third period saw Montana State Billings jump out to their biggest lead of 19 with 24 seconds remaining before Savannah Huerta brought it back to 16 on a three-pointer with 12 seconds left. 

Entering the fourth, the Nanooks began an offensive onslaught going on an 18-8 run over 3:44, pulling within five at 74-69 with 31 seconds remaining. Alaska had a chance to pull within one-possession but Reimers missed a shot with 23 seconds left off of an offensive rebound. Following the miss, MSUB pushed ahead to 77-69 before the final was 77-71. 

Pearle Green and Destiny Reimers continued their freshmen dominance as Green led the way with 21 points and Reimers posted 18. Green added three assists and two rebounds while shooting 50% from deep. Reimers filled up the stat sheet grabbing eight rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block through 24 minutes played. Caitlin Pusich scored 11 points, going 5-6 from the FT line. She added four rebounds, two assists, one steal and block.

  • Pearle Green leads the way for the Nanooks with 15.0 points per game on 210 points through 14 games. Her 15 per game is good for sixth in the GNAC and makes her the top-freshmen scorer in the conference. 
  • Destiny Reimers follows with 12.8 points per game on 179 points through 14 games. 
  • Emma Wass is leading the Nanooks in field goal percentage, shooting 52.4% from the floor while averaging 4.4 points per game. 
  • Green leads the GNAC in made FG per game. Through her 14 games she has made 46 threes, knocking down 3.3 per game. 
  • Ellen Silva leads the Nanooks with 1.1 blocks per game. That ties her for sixth in the GNAC as she's tallied 15 through 14 games. 
  • Paola Perez-Mendoza leads the GNAC in steals per game, grabbing 2.5. She has 35 through 14 games. She also finds herself third in the conference in assists per game, averaging 3.8 per game.
  • Central Washington runs the head-to-head against Alaska. The Nanooks are 13-42 against CWU and are looking for their first win since Jan. 14, 2017 when they won on their home-court, 69-56. 
  • The Wildcats have won the last seven matchups.
  • Northwest Nazarene leads in the all-time series with Alaska as the Nanooks are only 6-35 against NNU. 
  • Alaska is looking for its first win over the Nighthawks since Jan. 3, 2015 when the 'Nooks won on their home-court, 82-76.
