UNIVERSITY PARK, Wash. – The women's cross country team capped off their season with more history as
Kendall Kramer posted the best finish ever by a Nanook. Alongside Kramer's top-10 finish,
Naomi Bailey and
Rosie Fordham improved upon last season's NCAA Cross Country Championships finishes.Â
Â
"The women met with the beast today." Said graduate assistant coach
Josh Sanderlin, "As soon as the gun goes off, every move will either cost you or create you. Throughout the race you transform to what you'll be at the finish line. I'm incredibly proud of these three women as I reflect on the leaders they've become throughout this season. It takes a village to continue this momentum and I hope the results today have sparked a movement from our community to create a competitive team for the future."
Â
The women's champion, Stephanie Cotter of Adams State, won the race with a finishing time of 19:45.2, the only sub-20 time of the day in the women's 6k championship race.Â
Â
The trio of Bailey, Fordham and Kramer made their names known all year, this time, it was on the biggest stage and it was Kramer leading the way as the Fairbanks-native crossed the finish line in a program-best eighth place. Over the entire 6k race, held in University Park, Wash. at Chambers Bay, the sophomore maintained a 5:36 pace before finishing in 20:52.2. "I felt very relaxed, and I got to flow within the group, and they carried me with them," said Kramer, "I got very taken care of leading up to the race which I really appreciated, so everything went right. Thank you, coaches!"
Â
Kramer's eighth-place finish not only solidified her as an All-American and the best-finish ever by a Nanook, but she was the top individual qualifier finisher.
Â
Rosie Fordham followed as the second-best Alaska finisher, finishing in 43
rd-place, crossing in a time of 21:27.1 with a pace of 5:46. Her placement of 43
