Nanooks Sweep Seawolves in First Fairbanks Leg of Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks finished a sweep of the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday, Dec. 10. After five goals on night one, the 'Nooks used seven to propel themselves to a 7-2 win, moving to 7-7-2 on the season.

5:07 into Saturday's game A.J. Macaulay found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal. Chase Dubois battled along the penalty box walls to come up with the puck before finding Macaulay for the one-timer after the cross-ice pass. It did not take long for the 'Nooks to create a two-goal lead as Markuss Komuls cleaned up at the net, following up on a Payton Matsui shot that was stopped by UAA netminder Jared Whale. After Matsui's shot was stuffed, Komuls followed up with the rebound. The Nanooks added a third in the first with Arvils Bergmanis finding the back of the net. After Xavier Jean-Louis found Jonny Sorenson, Sorenson then played the puck to Bergmanis who then made a run through the Seawolves' defense, beating Whale 18:29 into the period.

Matt Radomsky stopped all five shots-on-goal in the first, keeping Anchorage off the board.

It took less than five minutes for the Nanooks to make it a 4-0 lead in the second when Kyle Gaffney tallied his first of the night from Markuss Komuls and Anton Rubtsov. UAA got on the board five minutes later when Maximilian Helgeson posted an unassisted goal, making it 4-1 9:58 into the second.

Nearly 10 minutes passed before the next goal. Markuss Komuls made a long distance pass to Brady Risk who took the puck into the attacking zone on an odd-man rush. Risk beat Whale for the fifth goal of the night and his third of the weekend, making it 5-1 heading to the third period. Three more goals were scored in the third; two by the Nanooks and one by UAA. Gaffney tallied his second of the night, using Komuls and Rubtsov assists again to make it 6-1. His second goal came only 1:11 into the third. Simon Falk finished the scoring off for Alaska taking a pass from Connor Mylymok and beating Whale only a 1:13 after Gaffney's second.

UAA pulled Whale after the seventh goal, bringing Joey Lamoreaux in for 17:29 minutes in goal.

The Nanooks followed in line by pulling Radomsky for Lassi Lehti, who made his collegiate debut and saw 10:47 in net. He made five saves and allowed one goal. Ben Almquist posted a shot on Lehti, who saved it, but after the stop, he found himself out of position and William Gilson scored on the rebound 12:16 into the third.

The 7-2 score stood as the final and the Nanooks earned their first sweep of the 2022-23 season.

Radomsky ended the night with 18 saves in 48:43 net time. Markuss Komuls led the 'Nooks with four points on one goal and three assists while Gaffney added a pair of goals. 12 Nanooks earned a point tonight while four tallied two or more.

Alaska travels to Anchorage next weekend for a two-game matchup on Dec. 16-17 at the Seawolf Sports Complex.
