FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team and head coach
Amy Donovan are on the board once again. The two got their second win of the 2022-23 season with an 84-49 win over the Multnomah Lions. The win moves Alaska to 2-6, 0-2 GNAC on the season.
Alaska jumped out to an immediate 6-0 lead behind four quick points by
Kayla Johnson. The 'Nooks would never trail in the game after taking the early lead. Multnomah would try and cut into the lead several times throughout the game, including early in the first quarter, as a three would cut the Nanooks' lead to just three, 6-3. An immediate 12-0 run, fueled by Johnson and
Ellen Silva, gave Alaska a commanding lead, 18-3. Alaska would end the first up, 27-14.
An early cold spell in the second quarter allowed the Lions back into the game, cutting the lead down to just two with three minutes to go in the second quarter. However, the trio of Johnson, Silva and
Emma McKenney stomped out this comeback attempt, scoring the rest of Alaska's points in the half, taking a seven-point lead to break, 39-32.
Donovan and her team would come out firing in the second half, outscoring the Lions 45-17 in the second half, including a dominant 21-4 third quarter where the 'Nooks defense held Multnomah to just 2-16 shooting in the quarter. However, the third-quarter run would be too much for the Lions.
The Nanooks were led by Silva, who poured in 24 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, a block and a steal. Silva would net those 24 points going a perfect 10-10 from the field. McKenney, Johnson and
Emma Wass would join Silva in double figures, scoring 16, 15 and 11, respectively. Johnson added seven rebounds, including three offensive rebounds that led to second-chance opportunities for the Nanooks.
The Nanooks return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 10, at home against the Lions once again.
