Hockey Falls to St. Thomas 3-2 in Overtime

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team lost for the first time in 2022-23. They fell to the St. Thomas Tommies on Saturday, Oct. 8 in a 3v3 OT period to move to 2-1-1 on the season.

This game saw the Nanooks score for the first time on the power-play this season, but unfortunately, their pair of goals in the second period was not enough to leave with a sweep of UST. The Tommies got the scoring started at the midway point of the first period as 8:39 into the game, Mack Byers made it 1-0 St. Thomas on a pass from Lucas Wahlin, who had the primary assist, and Ryan O'Neill, who received the secondary. The 1-0 UST lead stood into the second period until 12:57 in when Chase Dubois netted his first goal of the season. While on the power-play, the Nanooks found Dubois near the faceoff circle. Garrett Pyke played the puck to Brady Risk near the point, who then found Dubois for the one-timer and equalizer, making it 1-1.

Five minutes later, on the power-play again, the Nanooks struck. This time it was Brady Risk with the tally. Harrison Israels played the puck up the wall to Pyke, who drifted to the slot before finding Risk just outside the crease along the goal line. UST netminder, Aaron Trotter slid over for the attempted save, but Risk beat Trotter over his skates, making it 2-1 Nanooks with 2:18 remaining in the second stanza.

Unfortunately for the Nanooks, that was where their momentum stalled as St. Thomas would go on to net the equalizer 2:03 into the third period. Luc Laylin beat Matt Radomsky on the power play, tying the game at 2-2. Both sides had ample opportunity in the third period as the Nanooks put 13 shots-on-goal that were saved by Trotter while UST had nine other shots saved by Radomsky in the third. With the 2-2 tie at the end of regulation, the two sides went to a 3v3 OT where UST ultimately won the game.

1:28 into the extra time, the Tommies' Josh Eernisse took a pass from Cameron Recchi and beat Radomsky, winning the game 3-2 for St. Thomas. Recchi stopped the Nanooks' attack and Eernisse took the puck from inside the Alaska attacking zone and went coast-to-coast for the winner.

Radomsky ended the night with 13 saves.

Alaska returns home for a Thursday/Friday series with Michigan Tech on Thursday, Oct. 13 and Friday, Oct. 14. Game one is a 7:37 p.m. start and night two is a 7:07 p.m. start.
