FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to the Michigan Tech Huskies for their first loss on home ice during the 2022-23 season. With the loss, the Nanooks are now 2-2-1 and the Huskies moved to 1-1-0 on the season.
The Nanooks had a first period power-play, but only managed one shot-on-goal during the two-minute minor on Tech. In the first, MTU outshot the Nanooks 11-8 but neither side found the back of the net. The Nanooks escaped the first scoreless after an MTU goal was overturned for an offsides call, leaving the first intermission score at 0-0. Unfortunately that changed 2:59 into the second when Ryland Mosley scored an unassisted goal for the Huskies. He picked up the puck in his own zone and went coast-to-coast, skating into the slot and beating Matt Radomsky for a short-handed goal.
The Huskies took a commanding 2-0 lead 10 minutes later, still in the second period, when Logan Pietila connected on a rebound in front of the net to make it a two-goal lead for MTU. Kyle Kukkonen sent in the initial shot before Ryland Mosley battled for a shot out front of the crease. Radomsky stood tall on the initial two, but through the scrum of bodies, Pietila had an opportunity and beat Radomsky on the final rebound. The 2-0 score stuck through the rest of the night.
In the third, the Nanooks killed the lone power-play opportunity and had good offensive opportunities late, but nothing could beat Blake Pietila, as the MTU netminder ended with 33 saves in the shutout.
The 'Nooks owned the faceoff circle, winning 29 and losing 19 to the Huskies. Colin Doyle went 11-4 in the circle and Harrison Israels saw success, going 9-4.
The two teams meet again on Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:07 p.m. at the Carlson Center.
