Late Heroics Secure 2-1 Win for Hockey at Northern Michigan

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team grabbed a game one win of their Northern Michigan series. With the win, the Nanooks moved to 4-4-1 on the season.

After allowing a late equalizer while down a man, the Nanooks responded quickly to grab a 2-1 victory. Jonny Sorenson got the scoring started in the game 4:00 minutes into the second period. After coming up with the puck in the neutral zone, Sorenson skated into the slot, beating NMU netminder Beni Halasz to make it 1-0 on the unassisted goal. That score stood through the remainder of the second.

Through 40 minutes, Matt Radomsky kept NMU off the board, stopping all 18 shots-on-goal.

13:56 into the third, while on their fifth power-play of the night, the Wildcats capitalized. Joey Larson took the puck to the right of the crease from Simon Kjellberg and beat Radomsky to tie it at 1-1.

It did not take long for the Nanooks to respond. 16:30 into the final period and just two and a half minutes later, the Nanooks scored the game-winner. Garrett Pyke played the puck under the goalie line and fired the puck back towards the crease. Matt Koethe redirected the puck off the skate of a Northern skater and was awarded the winner, making it 2-1 Nanooks. Halasz left the net for the final 1:05 but the Nanooks defense stood tall as Radomsky only needed two saves in the third to secure his fourth win of the season. He ended the night with 20 saves and a .952 save percentage.

The two teams do battle again tomorrow at 2:07 p.m. AKT.
