FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team knocked-off the AIC Yellow Jackets in the final game of their opening weekend series. With the win, the Nanooks move to 1-0-1 and dropped American Int'l to 0-1-1.
The Nanooks were not able to get on the board in the first despite putting 14 shots-on-goal. AIC netminder, Alexandros Aslanidis stopped all 14 attempts while 'Nooks goalie
Matt Radomsky stopped all four shots-on-goal sent his way. The Nanooks were unable to capitalize on two first-period power-plays, getting only one shot-on-goal during their chances.
The first tally of the night came 10:31 into the second period when
Jonny Sorenson found the back of the net. He picked up his first goal with the Nanooks after
Cade Neilson forced a turnover and found Sorenson for the goal. Neilson picked up his second assist and point of his young college career while Sorenson tallied his first point for the 'Nooks. It took only six and a half minutes for Alaska to strike again.
Chase Dubois found
Kyle Gaffney who then found
Colin Doyle slashing to the front of the net. He lit the lamp making it 2-0 with just over two minutes remaining on the clock.
1:09 later, the Yellow Jackets beat Radomsky, cutting the lead in half. Off the draw, Brett Rylance won the puck in the corner. After cutting into the slot, he fired a shot that rebounded to Nicholas Cardelli and Cardelli fired it into the back of the net. Alaska posted 25 shots-on-goal in the first two periods before posting only four in the third. They took a 2-1 lead into the third before their defense and goalie play stepped up huge down the stretch. Radomsky stopped all 10 shots in the third including a firestorm down the stretch as AIC played with an empty-net and an extra-attacker for the final two minutes of the game.
In the end, he made 20 saves in net.
The Nanooks take to the road this upcoming week and will head to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. They'll play the Tommies on Friday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 8 with both games available on FloHockey.tv and KSUA 91.5 FM.
