FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks are proud to introduce their new #ThankYou series on Monday, a digital event that will take place through the spring of 2021. The series will highlight one Alaska Nanook corporate partner throughout the course of a week, posting various types of engagement throughout each of the Alaska Nanooks social media platforms and the website.
"Although this is a very different year than what we are used to, we in the Athletics Department are so thankful to our corporate partners who continue to support our Nanook student-athletes," Associate Athletic Director for Corporate Partnerships
Nona Letuligasenoa said on Monday. "Despite competition schedules being cancelled, postponed or scaled down, our student-athletes are currently on campus practicing and working toward their progress toward degree. Without the help of our corporate partners and donors this season, it would've been extremely hard to give our student-athletes the support they needed this year."
Each Monday in the #ThankYou series will be focused on getting to know our selected corporate partner. Stay tuned throughout the week and the spring season to see what we have in store with our wonderful partners.
In our first #ThankYou week, the Alaska Nanooks will be highlighting longtime sponsor, Kinross Fort Knox. Read more about the company below.

The company is focused on delivering value through operational excellence, balance sheet strength and disciplined growth, and responsible mining.
Fairbanks' Fort Knox mine is one of three Kinross projects in the United States, along with Round Mountain and Bald Mountain, both located in Nevada. In 2021, the Americas (which also includes Paracatu, Brazil) are expected to produce 1.4 million ounces of gold, or 58%, of the company's targeted gold production.
The following is from Fort Knox's website:
"Fort Knox is a centre of excellence for the Company as one of the few cold weather heap leach facilities in the world. In 2019, the site poured its eighth millionth ounce of gold, more than 20 years into its mine life.
Fort Knox is an open-pit gold mine located near the city of Fairbanks, Alaska. It is mined by conventional open-pit methods, with ore processed at a mill and heap leach facility. The mill has a capacity of up to 45,000 tonnes per day, with large volumes of lower grade ore and mineralized waste materials processed in the heap leach.
Production from the heap leach began in late 2009, which increased mine life and helped lower costs.
In October 2019, Fort Knox's excellent safety performance was recognized by the U.S. National Mining Association as the mine received the prestigious Sentinels of Safety Award in the Large Metal Mine group for achieving 1.5 million hours without a Lost Time Injury.
Gilmore Expansion Project
The Company announced that it was proceeding with the Gilmore expansion project in June 2018, after gaining mineral rights in December 2017. With the initial Gilmore expansion, it is expected that Fort Knox mine life will extend to 2030.
As of November 2020, work on infrastructure and processing facilities of the Gilmore project is substantially complete. First ore was placed on the new Barnes Creek heap launch pad in early October 2020, with construction of the pad completed on time and under budget.
With additional upside potential beyond the Gilmore project, Kinross will continue to explore prospectivity of the Fort Knox area.
