FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fell to 1-12-0 this season to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers. RPI used two first and third period goals to defeat the 'Nooks 4-1.
RPI struck first 13:44 into the opening period. Kyle Hallbauer found the back of the net giving the Engineers the early advantage. Nearly three and a half minutes later, while on the power play, Rensselaer added another. This time, Simon Kjellberg, who assisted on the opener, scored his own, fighting one past Nanooks netminder, Gustavs Grigals, making it 2-0.
Nothing came of either side in the second period. Alaska had the best opportunity on the night as they found themselves on a five-minute major power play at the 10:25 marker of the second period, however, after six shots-on-goal, the Nanooks had nothing to show. They entered the third period trailing 2-0. Only 1:21 into the third stanza, Justin Addamo made it a 3-0 ballgame, taking a cross-ice pass from Jack Brackett and found the back of the net.
Garrett Pyke capitalized on the next power-play opportunity for Alaska and got them on the board with their lone-goal. After taking passes from Filip Fornaa-Svennson and
Chase Dubois, Pyke put one on net from just inside the blue-line and beat Linden Marshall, making it a 3-1 RPI lead.
Unfortunately, RPI added the dagger on the empty-netter with 9.2 seconds remaining, sealing the deal, and taking the victory 4-1 over the Nanooks.
These two teams meet again tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 11 at 7:07 p.m. in the Carlson Center.
