Women's Basketball Falls to Timberwolves of Northwood

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to Northwood on day two of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. The Timberwolves grabbed the win 76-61, dropping Alaska to 1-3 in the early season.

Northwood grabbed an early lead, 19-15, but the Nanooks stayed close heading into the locker room, pushing 12 across in the second quarter, making it 31-27 Northwood. Unfortunately, the third quarter struggles continued for Alaska as the Timberwolves outscored the 'Nooks by nine out of the break. Northwood went on to take the win by 15, being led by Makenzie Todd, who posted 20 points.

In the first quarter, the Timberwolves jumped out to a quick lead. Alaska quickly turned it around and grabbed a three-point lead, using a bucket from Zosha Krupa. The two teams traded lead-changes until the 3:32 mark of the first when the Timberwolves grabbed a one-point lead and pushed it out to four at the end of the quarter. The deficit grew by the midway point of the second, expanding to 14 on a Jayla Strickland layup. Alaska answered, and quickly. Emma Wass, Claudia Diez Mari and Destiny Reimers pushed across a 9-0 run to end the half, pulling it to 31-27.

After tying the game less than four minutes into the third, Northwood pulled away. They made it a 13 point deficit heading into the fourth. In the fourth, the Nanooks were able to pull within seven, but not any closer.

In the loss, Destiny Reimers was the leading-scorer, posting 19 points on 9-16 shooting. She added six rebounds and one steal. Claudia Diez Marti had 15 points, two steals, four assists and shot 6-17 from the field and knocked-down three three-pointers. Paola Perez-Mendoza had a near triple-double with eight points, nine assists and seven rebounds. She added five steals and one block.

The Nanooks end their tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 27 at 3:00 p.m. when they play Southern Nazarene.
