Women's Basketball Falls to Southern Nazarene to End Mt. McKinley Bank NSI

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to Southern Nazarene on the final day of the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. The Crimson Storm ran away with an 87-62 win dropping Alaska to 1-4, 0-0 GNAC on the season.

The Nanooks fell behind early, trailing by 16 after the first quarter. SNU came out of the gate and posted a 27-11 score after the opener. The Nanooks put up a great fight in the second quarter, outscoring the Crimson Storm 22-17. Another third quarter struggle struck Alaska as out of the locker room, SNU outscored the Nanooks by 10. The momentum stuck with Southern Nazarene the rest of the way as they stretched their lead to 25 for the win, 87-62.

Off the bat, the Nanooks were staring down a 21-point deficit. SNU rallied off a 21-0 run to start the game and the run continued through the entire quarter. The Nanooks managed to pull within 16 after 10. Alaska put together quite a run in the second quarter. Thanks to Savannah Huerta, Alaska managed to pull within seven at the midway point of the quarter. Huerta posted 16 first-half points, and helped get Alaska within 11 at the halftime break. Southern Nazarene shot 40% out of the locker room while Alaska managed only 18% and Alaska found themselves trailing, once again.

Unfortunately, for the Nanooks, the seven-point deficit was the closest they'd get. Heading into the fourth the Nanooks trailed by 21 and eventually fell by 25.

Savannah Huerta led the way for the Nanooks with 18 points on 6-12 shooting and three three-pointers. Claudia Diez Marti and Pearle Green each posted 10 in the loss. Green added four steals, five assists and four rebounds.

The Nanooks open GNAC play next weekend at Saint Martin's and Western Oregon.
