FAIRBANKS – The Nanooks volleyball team made quick work of the Saint Martin's Saints on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium in the Patty Center. This was the second-to-last regular-season game for the volleyball team.
The Nanooks took the opening-set 25-10 with a .407 hit percentage while holding SMU to -.054. They maintained that attack through the next two sets, posting a .438 percentage in the second and .206 in the third. SMU never hit over .140 in the three sets at Fairbanks. Set one went the way of the Nanooks very quickly. After SMU pulled within one at 6-5,
Cate Whiting went on a service-tear, making it 15-5 in the matter of moments. The Saints broke the run but Alaska responded with another, making it 23-8 quickly after. They took the first 25-10.
In the second Saint Martin's grabbed an early lead, but Alaska stretched together a few runs, quickly turning the tides towards a 22-14 Nanooks lead. SMU snagged a few points, but Alaska put them away 25-16. The third set proved to be the tightest of the trio. While Alaska maintained the lead throughout the final set, the Saints stuck with until the closing points. After Alaska made it 17-11, the door slowly began to close for the Saints.
Sophie Schilling soon made it 22-14 Alaska and a Saint Martin's service-error eventually put it away for the Nanooks' sweep.
Schilling led the way with nine kills and added a .400 swing percentage and four blocks.
Emily Moorhead and
AveRee Reynolds led the Nanooks with six blocks each. They both added six kills.
Dani Dodge led the way with 14 digs and
Cate Whiting posted 31 assists, five digs, four blocks and two kills.
The Nanooks take on Western Oregon on Saturday, Nov. 20 for Senior Day. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. AKT start.
