FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team knocked-off the #25-ranked Central Washington Wildcats in the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium at the Patty Center on Saturday, Oct. 9. With the win, the Nanooks move to 13-7, 6-2 GNAC.
Alaska took the first-set, 25-17 before CWU grabbed the second, 23-25. Alaska took the final two sets for the upset-win, 25-21, 25-22. In the first set the Nanooks tallied 16 kills, swinging .438 with only two errors. Central managed only nine kills while the 'Nooks forced them into six errors and a .107 swing percentage.
In the second set, the Nanooks fell in a close battle, but CWU picked up 14 kills with five errors. The Nanooks outhit the Wildcats with 17 kills, however their eight errors played the difference as CWU posted a .243 hit percentage while Alaska hit .200. Central took the set 23-25 pushing it to a 1-1 set tie. In the third, Alaska stormed back, taking it 25-21, They posted 19 kills to Central's 11, hitting .324, giving the Nanooks a 2-1 set lead. They went on to win the fourth and final set, posting another 19 kills while CWU put up nine.
The Nanooks were led by a handful of career-highs as
Sophie Schilling put up 19 kills and a hit percentage of .457. She added four digs and two blocks.
Karli Nielson added her own career-high in kills with 18. She added six of her own digs and one block.
Emily Moorhead added 10 kills and six blocks.
Cate Whiting added 55 assists, five kills, and 10 digs.
Dani Dodge had 13 digs while
Miya Ohms led the team with 21, giving her a new career-high.
