Volleyball Welcomes Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington to Town; Dig Pink Game on Thursday

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks welcome Northwest Nazarene and #25-ranked Central Washington on Thursday, Oct. 7 and Saturday, Oct. 9. The Nanooks welcome fans to come out and support the team, but remind all that masks are required for all in attendance.

Dig Pink – Thursday
Wear your pink out to the annual Dig Pink game against Northwest Nazarene on Thursday, Oct. 7! We'll all be decked out in pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of a tough road trip that ended in two Nanook losses. They dropped game one at Simon Fraser on Thursday, Sept. 30 in four sets. Karli Nielson led the way for the Nanooks with 13 kills. Rilee White and AveRee Reynolds joined her in double-digits with 11 and 10 kills, each. Cate Whiting had herself another double-double with 32 assists and 16 digs, both team-highs. Dani Dodge also added a double-double with 10 assists and 14 digs. 
 
On Saturday, Oct. 2, the Nanooks traveled to Bellingham, Wash. to face-off with the #20 Western Washington Vikings at Carver Gymnasium. They battled, but fell to the Viks in five-sets, their best game against WWU in over a decade. For the first time in 17 meetings, the 'Nooks grabbed a set from Western, pushing them to five before falling 13-15 in the deciding fifth-set. 
 
Weekly Leaders
Karli Nielson led the Nanooks with three kills per set in the two matches played last week. She began with 13 at SFU, adding six digs and two blocks while adding another 14 kills, three digs and two blocks at Western Washington. She is averaging 2.56 kills per set on the season so far. Senior Cate Whiting had herself quite a trip, recording two double-doubles, averaging 9.22 assists and 4.56 digs per set. She finished with 32 assists, 16 digs and three kills at SFU before finishing the WWU game with 51 assists, 25 digs and four kills. Whiting is fourth in the GNAC with 9.51 assists per set and is fourth in the NCAA DII with 647 total assists.
 
Senior AveRee Reynolds stacked up well against the SFU and WWU defenses as the OH averaged 2.78 kills per set and had 10 blocks in the two matches. At SFU, she finished with 10 kills and seven total blocks. At WWU she had a team-high 15 kills and three blocks. She is averaging 2.73 kills and 0.99 blocks per set.
 
Team Totals
Alaska is averaging 12.51 kills per set and is third in the GNAC with 16.54 digs per set. They also lead the GNAC and are fourth in the NCAA DII with 2.60 blocks per set and lead the nation in total blocks, tallying 176.5. We also rank fifth in Division II with 851 team kills and sixth in team assists, posting 786. 
 
Nationwide Stats
Joining Cate Whiting in the nationwide stat picture is Emily Moorhead, Sophie Schilling, AveRee Reynolds and Dani Dodge
 
Moorhead comes in at 18th in NCAA DII with 1.23 blocks per set. Also posting 75 total blocks, good for sixth in the nation. Just behind her in seventh is Sophie Schilling with 72 total blocks. Reynolds checks in with 66 of her own, making her ninth in the nation. Finally, Dani Dodge remains in the hunt for the top dig-collector. She is currently 21st in the nation with 299 total digs.
