Nanooks Sweep Chico State in Match One in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE - The Nanooks volleyball team made quick work of the Chico State Wildcats on Thursday afternoon. Alaska improved to 4-1 on the year with a 3-0 win; 25-20, 25-13, 25-14. 

Alaska posted an impressive .317 team hitting percentage to take down the Wildcats. They held Chico State to a .033 swing percentage and forced them into 19 errors with 22 kills. The Nanooks had 40 kills and just eight errors on the day. In the first, Chico State posted six kills and five errors while Alaska had 15 kills and four errors for a .250 swing percentage. Alaska got out to an early lead in the first before the Wildcats rattled four in a row to take a slim advantage. The two sides traded points before the Nanooks jumped from a 12-11 lead to 20-13 behind nine of 11 points. The Wildcats answered back with a small run but Cori Leavitt ended the set with a kill. 

In the second, Alaska posted just one error to Chico's seven. They also outhit the Wildcats 14-9 in kills and .406 to .061 in swing percentage. Chico had an early lead in the second but the Nanooks quickly found their stride. After an 8-8 tie, the Nanooks won four points, extending their lead to 12-8. They then won nine of the next 10 points for a 21-10 lead. They then capped the second set off with four of six points and won it on a Wildcats' service error. The third was similar to the second. The Nanooks swung .320 with 11 kills and three errors while Chico State had seven of each, swinging .000. Alaska won the set 25-14. It was close to start; Chico State opened with a 6-5 lead, but the Nanooks won six-straight points to go ahead 11-6. They'd then win four-straight to extend their lead to 15-7 as Kellan Flynn served a pair of aces in the run. 

Down the stretch, the Nanooks ran away, taking seven-straight points and making it 22-10. Chico would pull to within nine at 23-14 but a kill from Peri Hoshock and an ace from Haylee Lyons put the match away. 

Inside the Numbers
  • Alaska had 40 kills in the sweep of Chico State. They only had eight errors and swung .317. That is their best hitting percentage since Sept. 4, 2025 against Cal State San Marcos (.320).
  • Haylee Lyons led the Nanooks with 12 kills. She hit .435 and added five digs, three aces, two assists, and two blocks. 
  • Cori Leavitt followed with nine kills and a .474 swing percentage. She added five blocks and two digs. 
  • Cynphany Henderson had a match-high 18 assists for the Nanooks. Ashlyn White added nine. 
  • Tessa Onaga led with 19 digs and added six assists and an ace. Kellan Flynn had 11 digs with three aces. 
  • Alaska finished with seven blocks while Chico State had one team block. Alaska finished with 13 aces, the most in a single-match since Sept. 27, 2025 when they had 13 against Western Oregon.
