Hockey Pushes #16/15 Cornell to Overtime but Falls 3-2

ITHACA, New York – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team fought with #16/15 Cornell but fell in their second overtime game of the season. This loss dropped the Nanooks to 1-6-0.

The Nanooks and Big Red battled to a 0-0 tie after the first period. Both teams had two power play opportunities, but neither capitalized. In the first, the Nanooks out-shot the Big Red seven shots to six. That same energy continued into the second as the Nanooks doubled their shots-on-goal total, throwing 14 shots on net and landing two. The first came from Brayden Nicholetts, the freshman forward from Spruce Grove, Alta., as he took a breakaway and slid home his first-career goal. Riley Murphy was awarded the assist.

Only 1:02 went off the clock before Cornell evened the score. Ondrej Psenicka scored in front of the Nanooks net off of a tip-in. Only 22 seconds later, however, the Nanooks had the lead back. Didrik Henbrant took the puck from Arvils Bergmanis and Garrett Pyke and darted in front of the net getting one shot on goal before a loose puck out front of the crease found its way through the goalies five-hole and in. The Nanooks took their 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

After going over half of the third without allowing anything, the Nanooks made a crucial mistake. After playing the puck behind the net, Roberts Kalkis played a puck back towards the net but accidentally slid it into the Nanooks net off of Gustavs Davis Grigal's skate. The goal was awarded to Kyle Betts. Unfortunately, this goal led the Nanooks and Big Red to overtime.

Only 40 seconds into overtime, Brenden Locke ended it, giving Cornell the comeback victory over Alaska.

The Nanooks and Cornell are back in action tomorrow, Oct. 30 at 3:00 p.m.
