Cross Country Heads to Saint Martin's for 2021 GNAC Championships

LACEY, Wash. – Alaska cross country is headed to Saint Martin's for the 2021 XC GNAC Championships. Both teams will send six racers for the Championships race.

Last Time Out
The Alaska Nanooks are coming off of two weeks since their last race at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash. In the women's 6k race, Rosie Fordham led the way, finishing fourth-place with a time of 22:06.6. Following close behind was Kendall Kramer and Naomi Bailey. Kramer finished sixth with a time of 22:19.3 while Bailey finished seventh with a time of 22:22.3. Delainey Zock picked up a 48th-place finish and Sarah Baum and Sarah Olson rounded out the women's team finishes in 74th and 92nd.

On the men's side, Zephan Ozturgut was the top-finisher for the Nanooks, taking 85th-place with a time of 35:39.2 in the men's 10k race. Koen Ross came across next, placing 85th with a time of 35:39.2. Nolan Earnest and Jack Cater were close together in 107th and 114th and times of 37:31.2 and 39:22.3, respectively. Patrick Marbacher and Max Beiergrohslein finished the men's race in 39:51.5 and 41:14.6.

Racers
The women's team is sending Rosie Fordham, Kendall Kramer, Naomi Bailey, Delainey Zock, Sarah Baum and Rya Berrigan. This team will consist of five freshman and one senior in Berrigan.
The men's team will also be young, sending freshman; Koen Ross, Nolan Earnest, Jack Cater and Joe Davies. They are sending one sophomore in Mike Ohpoff and one junior in Zephan Ozturgut.

Course
It's looking like a rainy day in Lacey, Wash. on Saturday, Oct. 23. Forecasts are calling for a high of 54 degrees and rain.

GNAC's Last Time Out
The Nanooks have not participated in a GNAC Championships since the 2019 season. Despite having a condensed spring season in 2021, there was no Championships. Three runners on the current team raced in the 2019 race; Rya Berrigan from the women's team and Mike Ophoff and Zephan Ozturgut. Berrigan finished 67th with a time of 26:39.40 while Ophoff finished 68th with a time of 27:44.00 and Ozturgut finished 80th with a time of 28:41.90.

As for the team results, the Nanooks women's team finished with 244 points, good enough for an eighth-place finish. The men's team also finished eighth-place, finishing with 242 points.
