Erik Largen and the Alaska Nanooks hockey team officially announced their 2020-21 schedule on Thursday, May 14.
The Nanooks will unofficially begin their season on Sept. 19 with their annual Blue vs. Gold game at the Patty Ice Arena. A week after, the 'Nooks will be hosting an exhibition opponent that is yet to be announced. On Oct. 3-4, the Nanooks will officially open up their season as well as WCHA play. Lake Superior State will come to Fairbanks for a Saturday and Sunday matchup.
After the Lakers leave town, the Nanooks will take to their first NCHC opponent of the season, the University of Nebraska Omaha. The 'Nooks and Omaha will matchup on Oct. 9-10 at Baxter Arena in Omaha.
After their first bye week of the season, Alaska will host defending WCHA Champion, Minnesota State-Mankato on Oct. 23-24. The 'Nooks will look to knock off the Mavericks for the first time in over a year and a half. The Nanooks then take make their biggest trip of the season as they head to Huntsville, Ala. to face-off with the Chargers to end October and start November.
This begins a full month-long road trip for Alaska as after Huntsville, they head to Lake Superior State, take a bye week, head to Northern Michigan and finish the month off at their second NCHC-opponent, Minnesota Duluth.
Their in-state rivals, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves will be waiting for the 'Nooks in Fairbanks following their road trip as Fairbanks will be home to the first leg of the 2020-21 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup on Dec. 4-5. Before heading into the holiday break, the 'Nooks host Huntsville, rounding out 2020.
They open up the New Year at Minnesota State on Jan. 1-2 before heading to Ferris State the following week. They then come home for two weekends against Michigan Tech and Bowling Green before taking a trip to non-conference foe, Arizona State. After their final non-conference weekend, the 'Nooks come home to celebrate their seniors versus Bemidji State on Feb. 5-6.
Finally, the Nanooks end the regular-season at Bowling Green and Alaska Anchorage. The final matchups for the 2020-21 Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup are on Feb. 26-27 at Seawolves Sports Complex on the campus of UAA.
All Friday games are scheduled for a 7:07 p.m. AKT puck-drop, Saturday start times are TBD and Sunday, Oct. 4 against Lake Superior State is scheduled for a 5:07 p.m. AKT puck-drop.
