FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks junior guard,
Shadeed Shabazz ran away with the awards this regular season. This morning, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced their all-conference selections and the Seattle-native grabbed a Unanimous First Team All-GNAC selection, the Newcomer of the Year award, was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year and was named the 2019-20 GNAC Player of the Year.
Â
Shabazz was a force as soon as he entered the GNAC. In just his first year in the conference, he led the league in scoring, averaging 26.0 points per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 85.4% from the free throw line. His scoring did not go un-noticed either, as he was the lone GNAC player to score over 600 and 700 points in the season, scoring 729 total points this season.Â
Â
On the defensive side, Shabazz showed he is one of the nation's top defenders as he was the only player in DII to crack the century mark in steals with 110. He also led the nation and DII in steals per game with an average of 3.93. The Nanooks guard was a three-time selection for GNAC Player of the Week and had a streak of five consecutive 30-point performances and 11 consecutive games with 20 or more points.Â
Â
His season-high in scoring was 43 points, and that happened twice. The second time he scored 43, Shabazz tied the Carver Gymnasium scoring-record in the Nanooks victory over the Western Washington Vikings.Â
Â
The Nanooks and Shabazz's season is not over yet, however, as the begin the GNAC Championships tomorrow, Thursday, March 6 at Seattle Pacific when they face the Western Oregon Wolves in the quarterfinals.Â
