NAMPA, Idaho – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team played in their second road game of the week against a resilient 16-6, 11-3 GNAC Northwest Nazarene team. The 'Nooks lost 72-93, dropping their second game of a four-game road trip.
The 'Nooks struggled from the beginning but were able to keep the bleeding contained for the first six minutes, keeping within six points. However, after that, the Nighthawks began a 4-13 run to end the quarter at 14-29.
Jocelyn Gandara had five points, three steals and 3 rebounds for a solid first quarter performance.
The second quarter was a relatively evenly played quarter. The 'Nooks showed resilience and cut the NNU lead to eight with 3:46 left in the first half. Untimely turnovers and some missed shots allowed the nighthawks to build their lead back up to 16 and Alaska finished the first half down 31-47. Jocelyn Gandara added eight points and two more rebounds to her totals, leading the Nanooks at the half with 13.
The third quarter was an offensive showing for the both sides as the Nanooks allowed 33 points and scored 22. Jocelyn Gandara scored the first points of the second half with a layup to put the 'Nooks within 14, but it was all NNU after that, finishing the quarter 53-80. Sam Tolliver led with 10 of Alaska's 22 third quarter points and a steal.
The fourth quarter was the best one for Alaska scoring 19 and only allowing 13 points to NNU, but it wasn't enough to pull out a win. The Nanooks were able to cut the lead to 21 to end the game, losing 72-93. Sam Tolliver added four more points, a rebound, a steal and an assist to her final box score.
Even in a frustrating game there were still some good performances from Alaska. Jocelyn Gandara finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 3 steals closely followed by Sam Tolliver with 17 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals. In her efforts, Kylie Wallace added 13 more points and three rebounds. The Nanooks shot 41.5% from the field, 36.8% from beyond the arc and made 11-15 at the stripe. The stat that killed the 'Nooks was turnovers, giving the ball away 24 times compared to only 14 takeaways.
The Nanooks are now 7-16, 2-12 GNAC and tenth in the conference. Alaska's next game will be against their in-state rival, UAA, in Anchorage on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. The 'Nooks will then find myself in Billings, Montana for a game against Montana State Billings to close out the four-game road trip.
