ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team fell to their in-state rival, Alaska Anchorage on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The Seawolves grabbed a 36-90 win over the Nanooks dropping Alaska to 7-17, 2-13 GNAC.
The Nanooks fell behind early and from the opening tip, were playing catch up. Unfortunately, catching up to the Seawolves never happened. After one, the 'Nooks trailed by 16 before trailing at the half, 15-46.
Jocelyn Gandara put up eight first half points, as well as grabbing three rebounds. In the first quarter, the 'Nooks were trailing 0-7 off the bat to the hot-shooting UAA squad. After pulling within four points at 5-9, Anchorage pulled away, not allowing Alaska to score the rest of the quarter.
To start the second quarter, the Nanooks found themselves down 20 off the bat. The 'Nooks answered back, having a strong second quarter compared to their first quarter, but they could not manage to string together scoring possessions. Gandara hit one three and another jumper, grabbing five of her eight first half points in the second quarter. For the half, Alaska was outshot 16.7% to 41% from the field and 38.9% to 22.2% from three.
After coming out of the locker room for the start of the second half, the Nanooks found more of a spread offense as
Sam Tolliver scored six second half points, matching
Brittany Richards as the scoring leaders in the second part of the game. Despite two 'Nooks scoring in double-digits, the historic shooting night for Anchorage was too much to handle. Jahnna Hajdukovich scored a career-high 23 points on 7-11 shooting from three-point range and the Seawolves hit 16 three's as a team, breaking a school record.
Gandara ended the night with 13 points and six rebounds while Tolliver put up 10 points with three rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Sabrina Ungaro distributed the ball well tonight picking up a game-high seven assists.
Despite the tough night for the Nanooks, they still look forward to their next game on Saturday, Feb. 15 at Montana State Billings. Alaska looks for revenge against the Yellowjackets after MSUB sunk the 'Nooks on a last-second three-pointer in Fairbanks on Jan. 16.
