Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming home to end the 2019-20 regular-season after going on the road for the final time last weekend. The 'Nooks road tripped to Huntsville, Alabama to face-off with the Chargers of UAH. In game one of the series, the Nanooks fell behind early, trailing the Chargers 1-3 after the first period. Quickly into the second period, the Nanooks pulled the game even at 3-3. Alaska once again fell behind at the end of the period, going into the third period down 4-6. After 15 minutes of no scoring, the Nanooks struck for two goals late in the third period, tying the game at 6-6 and forcing overtime.
Nobody scored in the first 5-on-5 overtime, but only 29 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime,
Tyler Cline put a backhand into the back of the net for the Nanooks, giving the 'Nooks an extra WCHA point on top of the official tie.
Game two of the series went the way of the Nanooks. Only two minutes into the game, while on the power play, Alaska struck behind their captain,
Kylar Hope. Hope took a pass from the Jandric brothers and slotted the shot home, putting the Nanooks up 1-0. While on the power play in the second period, the 'Nooks struck again. This time it was
Tyler Cline, for his second goal of the weekend.
Tristan Thompson grabbed the third and final goal for Alaska with a 150-foot empty-netter. His goal came with only three seconds remaining in the game, giving him his fifth goal of the season.
Hobey Baker Update
Junior forward,
Max Newton is still in contention for the top-10 finish needed to advance to the second round of voting. Newton currently finds himself in 22nd overall place as we near the cutoff in the fan-vote portion of the award. You can still add your vote everyday if you go to HobeyBaker.com/vote. Each fan is given one vote per day up until March 9, 2020.
The Vancouver, B.C.-native is coming off of a four-point game against Huntsville on Friday, Feb. 7, grabbing one goal while assisting on three others.
Can't Stop Jandric
Steven Jandric, the junior forward from Prince George, B.C., has been on a role in the last month. After not picking up a point on Jan. 10 against Lake Superior State, Jandric now has a streak of seven games with at least one point. It all started on Jan. 11, the second game against Lake State when Jandric assisted on a goal in the Nanooks tie. After that, Jandric put up one point, three points, two points, one point, two points and two points, helping the Nanooks remain in the WCHA playoff picture and now helping them in their fight for home-ice.
Military Appreciation
The Alaska Nanooks hockey team took a field trip to Fort Wainwright on Monday, Feb. 10, handing out 300+ ticket vouchers to service men and women. During their tour of the base, Nanook hockey members were able to ask questions and learn about those who serve in the Military. Members from both Fort Wainwright and Fort Eielson will be in the crowd at the Carlson Center and recognized throughout the night.
