Castillo Leads @NanooksRifle in First Competition of 2020

RESULTS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Alaska Nanooks rifle team kicked off their spring season in Columbus, Ohio where they matched up against the #3 Kentucky Wildcats and the #6 Ole Miss Rebels today, January 11.

Junior, Haley Castillo, lead the Nanooks, placing third overall with an 1171 aggregate. Junior, Jessica Boyce also made the top ten overall, firing an 1163.

In the smallbore competition, three Nanooks placed in the top ten. Sophomore, Kellen McAferty placed seventh with a 580. He was followed by Boyce (578) and Castillo (577) who placed eighth and ninth, respectively.

Castillo was the lone Nanook to break the top ten in the air rifle competition. The junior placed third with an impressive 594.

The Nanooks fired a team smallbore score of 2302, falling to the Rebel's 2317 and the Wildcat's 2328.

In the team air rifle competition, the Nanooks tallied a 2353 placing them only three points behind the Rebel's 2356. The Wildcats recorded a 2371.

The Nanooks recorded a team aggregate of 4655. Ole Miss placed second in the tri-match with a 4673 and Kentucky won the match with a 4699.

Head Coach, Layne Lewis commented, "It was good to get back in the range after over a month off since our last match. We have improved since our last match on the road and we will continue this strategy into our match with Ohio tomorrow."

The Alaska Nanook rifle team is back in action tomorrow (Jan. 12) against the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio.
