SEATTLE, Wash. – The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team continued their strong play in Seattle this Saturday, Sept. 21. With a sweep of Saint Martin's on Thursday, Sept. 19 the Nanooks rode the momentum in to Seattle where they repeated that result, a 3-0 sweep of the Falcons. The final scores of 28-26, 25-21 and 25-22 were all close, and the play was even closer.
Set one saw the Nanooks jump out to an early lead. After a
Kim Wong kill set the score to 24-19 in favor of Alaska, Seattle Pacific caught a little late-set fire. The Falcons grabbed the next five points to tie it up at 24-24. A couple back-and-forth points then set the 'Nooks up for the win, when an SPU attack error ended set one with a final of 28-26.
Set two saw a comeback for the books. After trailing all set and trailing 21-14, something clicked for the 'Nooks. Three kills by
AveRee Reynolds, two by
Lahra Weber and two service aces from
Cate Whiting helped the Nanooks claim 11 straight points to roll to a set two victory 25-21.
The third set was back and forth. For most of the set the score was within one or two but after a 17-17 tie, Alaska jumped out and claimed the lead and sweep. Two Weber kills and an SPU attack error led to a 20-17 Nanooks lead, one that they would not give back. Alaska went on to claim set three and get their second straight sweep, 25-22.
Coach
Brian Scott spoke highly of his teams play after Saturday's match, "We played an exceptional match today. We reached and exceeded every statistical goal. Cate did a great job distributing the ball and got everyone involved offensively. Our defense was good and created lots of second chance points. I was especially proud of how we kept our composure and battled back in the second set. Looking forward to what this team can build on from here."
Weber once again led the Nanooks in kills recording 12 with a .171 hit percentage. She also added 11 digs. Whiting claimed another double-double as well with her 36 assists and 15 digs.
Makena Overbey shined on the defensive side of things claiming another 20 dig performance. Wong was efficient for a second straight game, getting 11 kills with a crazy hit percentage of .500.
This victory moves the 'Nooks to 5-5 overall and 2-0 to begin GNAC play. On Tuesday, Sept. 24, the rival-Seawolves of Alaska Anchorage come to Fairbanks in what will be a match you fans won't want to miss. Anchorage is coming off of a 2-0 opening weekend as well after defeating SPU on Sept. 19 and Saint Martin's on Sept. 21.
