FAIRBANKS, Alaska – On Monday, Alaska Nanooks swimming head coach
Becca Weiland unveiled the Nooks' schedule for the upcoming 2019-20 season, which will feature six official appearances at the Patty Center Pool.
Weiland officially sits at the helm of the Alaska Nanooks swim team since relieving longtime head coach Scott Lemley, who retired at the beginning of July. Weiland served as the program's associate head coach for the 2018-19 season under Scott.
In July, Weiland hired
Kelsey Leeson as her assistant coach, who officially started working for the Nanooks on Aug. 1.
"The coaching staff is excited about a multitude of events that are happening this upcoming season," Weiland said on Monday. "We are bringing in one of the most academically and athletically talented groups of incoming freshmen, almost half of our conference scorers are returning, we are competing against new NCAA Division I opponents and we have a brand new coaching staff. With all of these components, I am anticipating this upcoming season to be one of the most successful seasons that Nanook swimming has ever seen."
The Nooks will host two scrimmages this season, starting with their annual Blue vs. Gold Pentathlon on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. AKT before taking on their alumni on Friday, Oct. 4 at 5 p.m. AKT. Both exhibitions will take place at the Patty Center Pool.
Alaska will officially kick-off the 2019-20 season against DI opponent San Diego State University, hosting the Aztecs on Sunday, Sept. 29 and Monday, Sept. 30. Both Sunday and Monday's competition will take place at 5 p.m. AKT.
The Nanooks will play host twice-more before the holiday break, taking on the Azusa Pacific Cougars on Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 before hosting the Seattle University Redhawks on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16. Friday meets against both the Cougars and the Redhawks will take place at 5 p.m. AKT, while Saturdays are slated for 10 a.m. AKT.
Alaska will hit the road for the remainder of the season, first making a stop in Malibu, California to compete in the Pepperdine Winter Invitational Nov. 22-24.
Following the New Year, Alaska will travel to Tacoma, Washington to compete against the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes on Friday, Jan. 10 before traveling north to take on Simon Fraser University Jan. 17-18 in Burnaby, British Columbia. Furthermore, Friday's meet against the SFU Clan will also feature the University of Victoria.
The Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships will take place Feb. 12-15 in Los Angeles, California, while the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships are set to take place Mar. 11-14 in Geneva, Ohio.
