MORGANTOWN, W.V. – The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team concluded the 2018-19 season on Saturday afternoon, competing in the final day of the 2019 NCAA Rifle National Championships at the WVU Coliseum.
The Nanooks finished the championships ranking eighth in the overall team scores with an aggregate total of 4640.
"We continued our 29th consecutive showing at the NCAA Championships and we are already planning to make it 30 next season," head coach
Layne Lewis said on Saturday. "We are going to have a younger team but we are going to learn and put our best foot forward next season."
Texas Christian University earned the overall national championship title on Saturday, posting an aggregate score of 4699. Championships host West Virginia University ranked second with a 4692, followed by the U.S. Air Force Academy, who rounded-out the top-three with a 4687.
Murray State took fourth (4677), followed by Kentucky (4665), Army West Point (4646), the Navy Academy (4642) and lastly, the Nanooks.
In the individual aggregate total, senior
JT Schnering ranked within the top-10, collecting a smallbore score of 579 and an air rifle score of 593 to place eighth overall.
Following Friday's smallbore competition, Saturday consisted of the air rifle discipline. The Nanooks placed fifth in the team air rifle rankings, compiling a team score of 2353.
In the team air rifle rankings, Air Force placed first (2368), followed by TCU (2368), WVU (2361), Murray State (2357), Alaska, Army (2351), Navy (2344) and Kentucky (2343).
Individually, Schnering led the Nanooks in the air rifle competition with a team-best 593, qualifying him for the finals. The Fairbanks native placed fourth in the eight-person individual final with a score of 205.1, his highest NCAA finish of his career.
TCU's Kristen Hemphill took home the individual air rifle national championship title, posting a 248.2 in the final.
Alaska sophomore
Haley Castillo ranked 16th in the air rifle championship, shooting a 590. Redshirt-senior
Robert Scott rounded-out Alaska's top-three individuals on Saturday, placing 31st overall with a score of 586.
Rookie Kellan McAferty ranked 36th with a 584, followed by sophomore
Liam Eberhart, whose 579 ranked him 42nd.
